2021 Memorial Day Morning Service

On May 31, American Legion Post 283 remembered local veterans with a 9 am service at Violet Cemetery. Boy Scouts from Troops 26 and 1147 helped with the ceremony as did Cub Scout Packs 256 and 1147. Pickerington City Councilman Tony Barletta and Violet Township Trustee Melissa Wilde were both in attendance. Legion Commander David England led the ceremony which included the Scouts lowering the flags to half mast, a rifle salute, and trumpet soloist Thomas Anderson performance of Taps. The Legion’s Ladies Auxilary placed a wreath in front of the cemetery’s veteran’s memorial.

Immediately after, Pickerington police led a procession from the cemetery to Victory Park with Violet’s fire trucks filing behind. At the Park, England and Mayor Lee Gray both gave speeches urging everyone to remember the true purpose of the holiday – to remember veterans who are no longer here and to recognize their sacrifices.
