Police/Sheriff’s Reports June 19-25, 2022

Pickerington Police:

Times are rounded to the nearest quarter hour.

June 19

5:45 pm: A 47-year-old Violet Township man allegedly drove a Hyundai Elantra between the right two lanes of Hill Road to turn right on State Route 204.  In doing so, he sideswiped a Chevy Tahoe and a Ford Focus before rear-ending a Lexus U25, the impact of which pushed the Lexus into a Chevy Equinox.

All parties initially stopped to make sure everyone was uninjured, but after a few minutes the Elantra driver who caused the accident returned to his car tried and to leave the scene. The eighteen-year-old passenger of the Ford Focus (his younger sister had been driving) reached through the Elantra’s window in an attempt to grab the keys and began punching the driver.

The suspect “slammed the gas” with the young man still partially inside the car and nearly hit the teen’s mother. The car hopped the curb and swiped a street sign which dislodged the teen.  The driver then struck a fence post at the Pisgah Cemetery before continuing onto State Route 204.

The suspect drove as far as the ReMax near Yarmouth Road before ditching the Elantra and taking off by foot. Police caught the man in the woods near the Motorcycle Hall of Fame and Museum.

He told the officers that he had been assaulted and that he was unable to see. Violet Township transported him to OhioHealth Pickerington for evaluation.

Despite suffering from significant bruising, the young man declined to press charges. His mother however did press charges relating to the driver allegedly attempting to hit her when leaving the scene.

The suspect said that faulty brakes on the Elantra caused the accident. On June 8, the suspect had blamed the Elantra’s brakes for a different traffic stop.

An officer exiting Interstate 70 at the 112C off-ramp witnessed the Elantra reverse toward on-coming traffic, proceeded forward toward the traffic light, run the red light and then make a U-turn to head back toward the ramp.

The suspect stated that the brakes were not working well. When the officer asked him how he stopped just then, he said it was because he had hit the curb. He said that the vehicle belonged to a good friend of his who had passed away and left him the vehicle.

The officer cited the man for expired plates and the red-light violation then gave him a warning for the U-turn and improper backing. At the time the suspect said that the car was safe to drive home, and he stated yes. The officer advised him not to drive the vehicle until the brakes were fixed.

After the incident on June 19, the Elantra was impounded.

June 21

2:45 pm: A group of seven or eight teenage boys playing basketball at Diley Middle School upended a portable bathroom stall and busted two of the windows of a parked car with stones.

June 25

2:15 pm: A 51-year-old Columbus woman allegedly filled two bags with merchandise at Kohl’s then exited without paying. When confronted, the woman told the officer that she had contracted a medicine-resistant staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) infection then she proceeded to show open sores on both her hands and forearms.

Moments later, the store’s loss prevention officer (LP) joined them in the parking lot. He said that the surveillance system had also caught the woman shoving items into her pants. At his insistence, the women reached under her waistband and pulled out a pair of slides (slip on shoes).

The LP calculated the value of the merchandise to be $535.13. He also said that due to the suspect’s medical condition, the store must dispose of all that she stole.

A records check indicated that both the Fairfield County Sheriff and the Whitehall Police departments had warrants issued for the woman’s arrest.  The Sheriff’s Office declined apprehending the suspect until she had been medically cleared. Whitehall Police said they would take her right away.

5:15 pm: At the Speedway on Hill Road, a 29-year-old Johnstown man said that he was offered $20.00 to drive a 27-year-old Columbus woman that he had just met to Kohl’s.  While at Kohl’s, the woman was allegedly shoplifting a total of $237.00 in Nike merchandise including six pairs of shorts and a fanny pack.

The responding officer discovered that the woman was wanted on multiple warrants including a felony charge in Grove City.  The Pickerington police arranged to release her into Grove City’s custody.
