Visit Fairfield County’s Trail of Scarecrows is returning for the 2023 fall season. This year marks the fifth anniversary of the county-wide tradition and its return is set to be cinematic! Introducing 10 new categories, including Best Movie-Inspired Scarecrow, the Trail of Scarecrows is bigger and better than ever.

The Trail of Scarecrows is an experience visitors and residents of Fairfield County can enjoy during the month of October. Throughout August and September, Visit Fairfield County accepts registrations for scarecrows; businesses and residents within the county can register a scarecrow, then create and display it throughout October for all to enjoy.

It is completely free to register. Participants can register online at VisitFairfieldCounty.org/Trail-of-Scarecrows-Registration or by contacting the Visit Fairfield County visitor center and requesting a paper registration form.

Locals and visitors will delight in scarecrow challenges. A scarecrow challenge exists for every participating community in Fairfield County. With the Visit Fairfield County app, scarecrow fans can use the digital map to find scarecrows and enter a three-digit code to check in at each scarecrow. These codes are available on each scarecrow’s name sign.

After checking in at half of the scarecrows in a community, participants complete the challenge and can go to the Visit Fairfield County Visitor Center in downtown Lancaster to obtain prizes.

As people visit scarecrows across the county, they can also vote for their favorite in each community. The scarecrow that gets the most votes in its community will be deemed a People’s Choice winner and the resident or business responsible for the scarecrow will receive a $50 Visa gift card.

New this year, voters can write-in their favorite scarecrows and nominate them for awards such as Best Movie-Inspired ScarecrowBest DressedBest Scarecrow Scene, and more.

The residents or businesses that win in these categories will receive a special award for their display. Winners will be announced in early November on the official Trail of Scarecrows Facebook page.

The Trail of Scarecrows officially launches October 1-31, so don’t miss this autumnal tradition in Fairfield County! For more ideas on what to do this fall including a compilation of fun events, check out The Autumn Experience on the Visit Fairfield County website.
