The Ohio State Fair, July 29 to Aug. 9, is a celebration of the past, present, and future from Ashtabula County’s Covered Bridges to Cincinnati’s museum center, Toledo’s industrial history to Hocking Hills’ natural beauty.
In addition to the offering colorful games, deep-fried foods, and concerts, the State Fair hosts competitions and contests such as the Ohio Pork Council’s Rib-off on Aug. 4 which pitted Ohio’s best grill masters against each other. The fair is also where 4-H finalists vie for their projects to win state ribbons.
4-H program is a nationwide youth development program, named for the four symbols that represent its values – Head (clear thinking and decision-making), Heart (loyalty, kindness, and empathy), Hands (practical skills and helpfulness), and Health (physical well-being and vitality). Ohio 4-H Development is coordinated by the Ohio State University Department of Food, Agriculture, and Environment Science, with the extensions coordinating individual groups within each county.
There are 53 4-H Clubs in Fairfield County, including eight on the Northwest side.
The program encourages youth to work on individual projects and present them in competitions. 4-H projects are sorted into 23 categories, within which there are subcategories.
Below is a list of all the 4-Hers from the Pickerington Area who advanced from Fairfield County to compete this week at the Fair. Also listed are those who earned state ribbons at the state level. This section will be updated daily as results are announced.
