Step off your ship and into the Kingdom of Arendelle for a story that will take away the summer heat and leave you wishing for an extra layer. That story, told through song and dance, is Frozen Jr., performed by Victoria Players Children’s Theater (VPCT).

The story of Disney’s Frozen is one that many know from its theatrical release in 2013.

“It tells the story of two royal sisters, Elsa and Anna, whose bond is tested when Elsa’s magical powers accidentally plunge their kingdom of Arendelle into eternal winter. The story is filled with friendship, true love, a talking reindeer, and a snowman who loves summer,” summarized director Max DeBaltzo.

The cast is composed of young actors between the ages of 8 and 15, many of whom say the friendships formed during rehearsals have been one of the most rewarding parts of the experience.

“It’s very joyous and fun, and it helped us create bonds and meet new people,” said Kiah Baer, who portrays the Queen. “It was a really fun show!”

Ben Chabot, who plays Hans, agreed.

“The best part about creating the show is connecting with people I don’t know,” he said.

For Sara Joos, who plays Anna, the role held special meaning.

“My favorite part was letting the little kid who used to be Anna bring Anna to life,” she said. “It’s a funny show with heartwarming moments, and it tells a good message.”

The production also features elaborate costumes, energetic choreography, and impressive technical effects.

“I think audiences will love the costumes and the acting,” said Eli Zahler, who plays Sven. “The most fun part of creating the show was learning all the dance moves and practicing them.”

Gabby George of the Snow Chorus highlighted the show’s choreography.

“Audiences will love the dances,” she said. “Experiencing the ribbon dancing and learning how to create the effects with the ribbons” was one of her favorite parts of the production.

Amélie Baum, who portrays Elsa, believes audiences will appreciate the cast’s dedication.

Young Anna (Sylvia Gavin) and Young Elsa (Isla King) were best buddies.

“Audiences will love the love and the whole cast and how we all came together and put on a great show,” she said.

Baum also cited Elsa’s signature song as a personal favorite.

“My favorite part is ‘Let It Go’ because I get to look into the audience and watch their reactions to the song and all the effects that are happening,” she said.

Behind the scenes, cast members also praised the technical crew for helping create the show’s magical atmosphere.

“It impressed me by the end of the show how great Isaac did setting up the lights and just making the whole show come together in such a creative way,” said Dalton Dilley, who plays the King.

“The crew has all come together to make this magical production happen,” DeBaltzo said. “They have worked hard to provide the music, dance, costumes, props, lights, sound, and scenery that create a memorable performance. We’re incredibly grateful for both our new and returning volunteers.”

If you want to experience a heartfelt story filled with catchy songs, you’re in luck. While opening night has already passed, there are still opportunities to see the production at 2 p.m. on June 6 and 7.

Tickets are available at vpct.ludus.com.

“Tickets are selling well, but we do plan to have some overflow seating. So even if it says sold out and they can’t attend a different day, they should come to the box office to purchase seats,” said Jill Henwood, artistic director of VPCT.
