Black Pioneer History Tour

June 1, 2022 @ 6:30 pm - 8:00 pm

Black Pioneer History Tour Ad

The story of Scipio Smith, a former slave who becomes the first black person to do business in Lancaster, Ohio. We will start at the location of the old Effinger house and walk over towards the Glass Museum to visit the vicinity of Smith’s shop. Then, we will board a bus and travel to Allen Chapel to see the church that Smith founded 200 years ago. Current members of the church will tell the history as tour-goers will have the opportunity to set foot inside the historic icon. Finally, we will be taken by bus to Elmwood Cemetery. We will walk to the “black burial ground” and learn about a few other black pioneers buried there.

Please note: even though we are utilizing buses, it is still a walking tour. Participants must be able to walk on steps and over some uneven terrain.
Cost: $20 per person

*Tickets go on sale for members on Tuesday, May 3 and to the public on Wednesday, May 4.
