Update on Pickerington Rd./U.S. 33 Interchange

The Ohio Department of Transportation’s “Preferred Alternative Layout” for the intersection of Pickerington Road and U.S. 33.

On the Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) website, community members can check the progress of the U.S. 33/Pickerington Road construction.

The project will replace the current intersections and bridge over the railroad crossing. New roads will allow access to the interchange from nearby neighborhoods. Once the project is complete, the Allen Road intersection with U.S. 33 will be closed.

The interchange is part of a long-term effort to improve traffic flow and safety along the U.S. 33 corridor. Planning for this phase began in 2019–2020, with Pickerington Road ultimately selected over other locations because it connects better to the local road network and can handle current and projected traffic near schools, public services, and growing residential areas.

Summer 2025 – Summer 2026

  • Traffic will be maintained on both U.S. 33 and Pickerington Road. Motorists travelling on Pickerington Road will be shifted to a temporary alignment once constructed by the end of this phase.
  • Widening of the U.S. 33 bridge over Sycamore Creek.
  • Construction of north and south connector roads, as well as connections to Thorn Lane.

 

Summer 2026 – Spring 2027

  • Traffic will be maintained on U.S. 33 and Pickerington Road with concrete barriers along shoulders during construction.
  • Construction of new ramps connecting Pickerington Road to U.S. 33 begins. 
  • New bridge construction:
    • Pickerington Road over U.S. 33
    • Over the Indiana & Ohio Railway
    • Over Sycamore Creek

Spring 2027 – Summer 2027

  • Benadum Road to be realigned with the intersection of Pickerington Road.
  • Eastbound traffic on Benadum Road will be closed for approximately 30 days with a posted detour. Westbound traffic will remain open.

Summer 2027 – Fall 2027

  • Northbound traffic on Pickerington Road will be detoured while the roadway is reconstructed one side at a time. Southbound traffic will be maintained.
  • Removal of temporary Pickerington Road begins.

Fall 2027 – Spring 2028

  • Lane closures on U.S. 33 in both directions for final paving and striping.
  • The remaining ramps between U.S. 33 and Pickerington Road to be completed. 
  • Thorn Lane access to U.S. 33 to be removed. 
  • The temporary Pickerington Road is to be fully removed. 

 Spring 2028 – Summer 2028

   

 

  • Allen Road access to U.S. 33 will be permanently removed and cul-de-sacs will be installed.
  • All final connections and traffic patterns in place.
