As Memorial Day approaches, the American Legion Post 283 Auxiliary is continuing its time-honored tribute to fallen servicemembers through poppy pinwheels and traditional paper poppies.
The red poppy, a symbol of remembrance dating back to World War I, will once again be featured prominently as part of the post’s annual fundraising and memorial efforts. In the days leading up to Memorial Day, pinwheel poppies will be displayed behind the Post at 7725 Refugee Road and remain in place through June 1.
Community members who donate to the Post, may have their loved ones memorialized on the pinwheels All funds raised from the poppy program benefit the Post #283 Auxiliary Poppy Fund, which supports local veterans and their families.
Donations can be made online at www.alpost283.org/poppy-fund, or by mailing a check to Auxiliary Unit #283, 7725 Refugee Road, Pickerington, OH 43147. While a $5 donation is suggested, any amount is appreciated.
In addition to the decorative pinwheels, paper poppies—handcrafted by disabled veterans—will be made available for those participating in the community’s Memorial Day ceremonies, set for Monday, May 26. These poppies are also available in the Post 283 lounge for anyone wishing to wear one in tribute.
The Legion’s calendar is full of community-focused events this May. The Sons of the American Legion will host their annual golf outing on Saturday, May 17, featuring a fun-filled day of golf capped off with a steak dinner. Those interested in forming a team are encouraged to sign up early.
Additionally, the Legion’s Honor Guard continues to host its popular Steak Night on the last Friday of each month, offering a great meal while supporting the Post’s ceremonial duties and veteran outreach.
