On July 26 from 9:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., grab your gear and join in the fun at the Pickerington Youth Fishing Derby. This beloved community event invites kids to enjoy a morning of fishing and lighthearted competition. Sponsored by Don Shaffer & The Shaffer Team and funded through generous donations, the derby has become a summer tradition.

“Come out to the 19th Annual City of Pickerington Youth Fishing Derby,” said Don Shaffer, the founder and primary sponsor. “Enjoy a morning fishing on the pond with your friends and family. There are prizes in all age groups for most fish and biggest fish caught.”

Held at the Sycamore Creek Park Pond (located at the end of Hereford Drive), the event draws children from across the area, each armed with their own fishing pole and favorite bait.

“Every participant receives a t-shirt, a fishing bucket filled with a snack and water, and lots of other goodies supplied by the local sponsors,” Shaffer explained.

Registration is free, but spots are limited. “Registration for the derby closes once we hit the 150 mark,” Shaffer emphasized. “Don’t forget to register online to participate.”

The day before the event, Shaffer and his team head to Cabela’s to purchase prizes, which include everything from rods and reels to camping gear. Typically, the value of prizes totals around $400 per prize bracket (6 years and younger, 7–8 years, 9–10 years, and 11–14 years). Awards are presented in each age group for both most fish caught and largest fish.

“This event is for the children, so make sure you do everything in your power to support them—but don’t fish for them,” Shaffer said with a smile. “Bring your fishing pole and a smile! We handle everything else.”

Over the years, the derby has produced some memorable catches—and even some unexpected visitors. “I don’t know the records, but we’ve seen a 7-pound catfish caught, and a young lady caught over 30 fish a couple of years ago,” Shaffer recalled. “Last year, a relatively large hawk swooped down into the water and carried a fish away in its talons. It caught us all by surprise—it was an incredible sight to see.”

City officials echo Shaffer’s appreciation for the community effort behind the event. “The partnership we have with Don Shaffer and The Shaffer Team is a vital part of our city events,” said John Dennis, Recreation Coordinator for the City of Pickerington. “The fishing derby is a giant hit every year in the community, and we couldn’t do it without their help.”

Whether your child is an experienced angler or a first-time fisherman, the Pickerington Youth Fishing Derby offers a chance to make memories, learn patience, and enjoy the outdoors in a safe, welcoming environment.
