MILLERSBURG, OH (April 15, 2025) – The National Scenic Byway Association is proud to recognize the Hocking Hills National Scenic Byway with the 2025 Visitor Experience Award, honoring their innovative use of technology to enhance travel, accessibility, and engagement along this breathtaking route in southeastern Ohio.
The Hocking Hills Scenic Byway launched a GPS-enabled online tour and mobile app that brings the region’s natural beauty and rich history to life. Travelers now enjoy turn-by-turn navigation, narrated audio guides, real-time trail updates, and interactive maps, all from the convenience of their smartphones.
“This project turns a scenic drive into an immersive journey,” said Cynthia Coss, who led the initiative. “We’ve made it easier for visitors to explore, learn, and connect with the landscape in ways that are both engaging and sustainable.”
The digital experience allows users to customize their itineraries based on personal interests, whether that’s hiking to waterfalls, learning about local geology, or discovering small-town dining and shopping spots. Rich multimedia content including historical photos, videos, and stories deepens appreciation for the region while reducing paper waste.
The app also plays an important role in visitor safety and sustainability, offering real-time updates on trail conditions and promoting responsible exploration. By guiding travelers efficiently and highlighting lesser-known attractions, the project also supports local businesses and helps ease congestion at the most popular sites.
Known for its dramatic rock formations, forested trails, and iconic destinations like Ash Cave and Rock House, the Hocking Hills Scenic Byway now offers a modern, accessible experience that balances innovation with preservation.
