Step into the past July 6 from 2pm to 4pm, as the Pickerington-Violet Township Historical Museum hosts its annual Heritage Day, an afternoon dedicated to celebrating local history through immersive exhibits, live demonstrations, and family-friendly activities.

Held at the museum in historic Olde Pickerington Village, the event is free and open to the public. This year’s lineup includes a fresh slate of live heritage arts demonstrations sure to engage visitors of all ages.

“We try to change things up every year to make it interesting for visitors and offer something new for those who have attended before,” said Peggy Portier, president of the Pickerington-Violet Township Historical Society.

Among the featured demonstrators this year are Amber Taylor, who will spin wool by hand—a demonstration not seen at Heritage Day for several years—luthier Jacque Gray, who will be on site showing how he handcrafts violins, and Cyrus Moore III, portraying a World War I soldier writing a letter home with a fountain pen. Visitors will even have the chance to try writing with one themselves.

“They are all so different, that I’m looking forward to all of them,” Portier said. “We’ve never had a violin maker or a WWI soldier at all. It should be interesting.”

The museum’s permanent exhibits will also be open, showcasing everything from Pickerington’s early education and farming history to military memorabilia. Some displays are hands-on, with items children can touch and explore.

“If you are planning to stay home for the July 4th holiday and need something to round out the weekend on Sunday afternoon, we’ve got it covered,” Portier said.

Heritage Day not only entertains but also fulfills the Historical Society’s mission to connect the community with its roots. Through storytelling, artifacts, and live engagement with local history, the event offers a deeper appreciation of Pickerington and Violet Township’s unique place in Ohio’s past.
