Lancaster, Ohio – In a powerful display of collaboration and commitment to student safety, Berne Union Local Schools hosted a county-wide mock school bus rollover training on May 30 at the Fairfield County Fairgrounds. School transportation staff and local first responders convened on-site for the event to give drivers realistic emergency preparedness experience that could prove lifesaving in a real-world situation.

Approximately 57 bus drivers and other transportation staff participated in the training, which simulated a bus rollover crash. Drivers from Berne Union, Bloom-Carroll, Fairfield Union, Amanda-Clearcreek, and Lancaster City Schools were in attendance. Drivers had the opportunity to walk through a rolled-over school bus to experience firsthand what such a scene looks and feels like – an eye- opening moment for many. Afterward, student volunteers were positioned inside the bus to act as injured passengers while first responders completed a full mock recovery, demonstrating what unfolds when they arrive on scene and sharing what they need from drivers in emergency situations. Berne Union staff also presented the contents of their student emergency folders, offering practical tools and insights for districts to consider implementing.

The day sparked important conversations among transportation staff and discussions that could ultimately shape stronger safety plans and greater collaboration in the future. “This training is about more than just protocol, it’s about confidence and preparedness,” said Jon Parker, Superintendent of Berne Union Local Schools. “We’re incredibly proud of our transportation team and thankful to all the districts and first responders who joined us in this effort.”

“Prepared drivers mean safer kids,” added Angie Barnes, Berne Union Transportation and Maintenance. “Seeing transportation staff from across the county talking, learning from each other, and walking away with new ideas is the biggest benefit of all. This kind of hands-on training creates lasting impact.”

The event was made possible through the partnership of the Berne Township Fire Department, Pleasant Township Fire Department, Midwest Towing and Recovery, Air Evac Pleasant Township, and the Fairfield County Fairgrounds.

This collaborative effort underscores the importance of proactive training and strong school-community partnerships, ensuring safety remains a top priority for Fairfield County students and families.
