On Wednesday, Aug. 19, Zanesville’s Eagle Sticks Golf Club hosted the Ohio Capital Conference Shoot-Out, with schools throughout Central Ohio sending their Varsity Boys Golf Teams to compete.
The Dublin Jerome Celtics won the tournament with a score of 285, just one stroke below second place Bishop Watterson, and eight ahead of the Upper Arlington Golden Bears.
Pickerington North shot 300, joining a 4-way tie for 6th place. The team’s scoring was led by sophomore Matthew Zell, whose 72 was good for just two over the hilly courses’ par. Zell shot an eagle on the 541-yard hole 18, as well as a birdie on Hole 6. Zell placed 14th in individual scoring.
Fellow sophomore Kaden Thaboune’s 73 was powered by three birdies in his last five holes, pushing him back towards par after a handful of bogeys and a double bogey. His +3 was good for 20th place amongst the 106 who completed the competition.
Rounding out the team’s scoring was the junior duo of Gavin Hill and Trent Missler, who shot 75 and 80 respectively. Hill was -1 on his front 9, but a double bogey and a triple bogey in the latter half would lead to a score of +5. Missler’s +10 came of a handful of bogeys and a triple bogey on Hole 8.
Though his score was not included in the team total, junior Aiden Carr shot 89, with a trio of triple bogeys anchoring his +19 across the difficult terrain.
The Pickerington Central Tigers sent a team of five, as well as a solo competitor, to the match in Zanesville. The team shot a total of 319, which placed them 15th of the 21 competing teams.
Tiger scoring remained at a consistent level between athletes, with three of the five members of the team shooting 79. Cameron Cores, Rylee McKinney, and Joshua Childers were part of a nine-way tie for 49th on individual scoring.
The team score was completed by Carson Paris’ 82, a +12 overall following a +3-front half. In a similar manner, Blake Gallagher’s 85 was heavily impacted by a quintuple bogey on hole 10.
