Letter To the Editor: Pickerington Schools & Abraham Pickering

This is a view of N. East Street showing the “School on the Hill” (built in 1883) and the railway (built in1879) that goes through “downtown” Pickerington.

Those historic tracks are still here, and a proud school building still stands on the hill—one of 15 across our growing district. While our footprint has changed, the need to support our schools is greater than ever. Thank
you for always investing in our students’ futures. Please join us in supporting our community and vote YES for Pickerington schools this November!

Please vote YES for Pickerington Schools. Our beautiful little city and dedicated school system all
started with a passion for education by a man called… Abraham Pickering.

Abraham Pickering was born on July 8, 1776, in Virginia—just four days after the signing of the
Declaration of Independence. He grew up in Virginia and later married Ann Looker. As a wedding gift,
Ann’s father gave Abraham land in what was then the Virginia Military District. Abraham eventually
purchased additional land in the area and began developing what would become the town of
Pickerington. He built a log cabin home on land that is now part of Sycamore Park, establishing his
family and roots in the community.

In 1815, Abraham Pickering donated land for educational purposes, leading to the construction of the
area’s first official schoolhouse and laying the foundation for a tradition of learning that continues
today. This historic lot later became the site of Pickerington’s Carnegie Library, which now houses the
Pickerington and Violet Township Historical Society at 15 East Columbus Street.

Historically, Violet Township Schools referred to what is now the Pickerington Local School District.
The district operated under the Violet Township name beginning in 1905 and continued to do so until
1939, when it transitioned to what became known as Pickerington Schools.

Pickerington Schools was officially established in 1907. The original school building, located at 90 N.
East Street, was known as “The School on the Hill.” Today, that historic building continues to serve
the community as the home of the Pickerington Local School District’s administrative offices.
