COLUMBUS, Ohio – Following recent heavy rainfall and severe weather that swept through Ohio earlier this month resulting in State of Emergency Proclamations from Governor Mike DeWine, the Ohio Department of Commerce’s Manufactured Homes Program (MHP) is issuing important reminders to impacted manufactured home park operators and residents to ensure their safety.
With more than 1,500 active parks in Ohio, MHP is part of the Ohio Committee for Severe Weather Awareness (OCSWA) and it plays a key role in helping Ohioans prepare and plan for severe weather threats.
Program inspectors have been busy conducting on-site inspections at parks within its jurisdiction that have been impacted by the recent storms and any flooding. Any park owners and operators that have experienced damage from these storms, such as structural, utility or setup-related issues, are encouraged to contact MHP to request an assessment by emailing OhioManufacturedHomes@com.
Next Steps for MHP and Park Owners/Operators
- Reporting – If they haven’t already done so, park operators should report any damage, such as downed utilities, shifted homes, or drainage problems, to MHP as soon as possible at OhioManufacturedHomes@com.ohio.gov or 614-644‑2223.
- Inspection – Once local officials determine it is safe for program inspectors to do, MHP personnel will visit impacted sites to evaluate and document observed conditions.
- Remediation – If repairs or reinstallations are necessary, park owners and operators must hire licensed installers to conduct all repair work, and who must adhere to established installation standards and permit requirements.
- Follow-up Inspections – Before residents are permitted to reoccupy impacted homes, completed repair work must receive MHP verification.
Safety Tips for Park Operators and Residents
- Document everything –Take photos and videos of damage for insurance and compliance-related purposes.
- Verify credentials – Manufactured home parks should only employ State of Ohio‑licensed installers for any maintenance or restoration efforts. A contractor’s license can be verified through the eLicense system.
- Secure homes safely – Check tie‑downs, skirting, and utility hookups for looseness, breakage, or misalignment that may have occurred during the weather event.
- Coordinate with insurers – File damage claims promptly and thoroughly using your documented inventory.
MHP ensures safe installation standards and regulatory oversight of manufactured homes and parks across Ohio. The Program licenses park operators, manufacturers, installers, dealers, brokers, and certified inspectors/inspection agencies, and enforces installation guidelines, including footing, electrical and final inspections, before homes are occupied.
