Pickerington Author’s New Children’s Book Inspired by VP Kamala Harris

In the new children’s book by Pickerington author S.R.D. Harris, Future Miss President, the election of the first female vice president inspires a young girl named Kami to embrace her own dreams.

The new book released January 13 sold out within days as did the second printing (less than a week before Kamala Harris was inaugurated as the first female U.S. vice president, the first African-American U.S. vice president and the first Asian-American U.S. vice president). Pre-orders are currently being taken for the third printing.

Colorfully illustrated by artist Barry Davian and intended for beginning readers, the story follows Kami as she learns about how Kamala’s historic election has opened doors for all girls to pursue higher offices.

“My primary message is for children of all ages to be inspired to pursue their highest goals. No matter their gender, race, ethnicity, or abilities, I want children to know they can work hard every day to make small steps towards their big dreams!” said S.R.D. “My goal is for children to see that it is possible to achieve seemingly impossible goals, even in the face of adversity. Success, no matter how they personally define it, is possible, attainable and achievable for those who believe in themselves and work hard. We all can help each other achieve our goals by pooling our resources and assisting others through encouragement and genuine support!”

The Littrell sisters of Violet Township enthusiastically recommend Future Miss President.

“My friends would love the book because one of my friends loves to read and would read anything she could!” said seven-year old Ria, a second grader at Fairfield Elementary.

Ria plans to be president when she grows up.

Kindergartner Hollis, age six, is a fan of the illustrations – “Pink pictures, I love it!”

Little sister Allyn, age four, said that her favorite part was when Kami was sitting in the “big house” (the oval office).

“I have always loved books,” S.R.D. said.  “I have been an avid reader ever since I was a child and would volunteer at my local library. I was featured in two children’s books as a child, (My Munch Book and Yoga is for Me), I have always known I wanted to become a published author at some point. Being home with our children during COVID quarantine gave me the perfect opportunity to begin my author journey!”
